Does the Charging Module consume power when no smartphone is mounted?Updated a month ago

Yes, to a small extent. If you connect the SP Connect Charging Module directly to the motorcycle battery using the SP Connect Cable 12V DC, a small standby current may continue to flow even after the smartphone has been removed.

This is due to the design of the Charging Module, as it does not have a separate on/off switch and remains ready for operation as long as it is supplied with power.

What does this mean for the motorcycle battery?

Power consumption in standby mode is very low. However, during longer periods when the motorcycle is not being used, continuous standby current may place a load on the battery, particularly if the battery is older or already weakened.

For use on a motorcycle, we recommend connecting the Cable 12V DC to a switched ignition power supply.

  • The power supply is automatically disconnected when the ignition is switched off.
  • No standby current is drawn when the motorcycle is switched off.
  • This helps protect the battery from unnecessary discharge.
  • The Charging Module is automatically ready for use when the ignition is switched on.

Alternative for a direct battery connection

If connecting to a switched ignition power supply is not possible and the Charging Module is connected directly to the battery, we recommend manually disconnecting the power supply during longer periods of non-use or using a suitable switching system.

Summary

The Charging Module may continue to draw a small standby current from the motorcycle battery after the smartphone has been removed. For the best solution, we therefore recommend connecting the Cable 12V DC to a switched ignition power supply so that power is automatically disconnected when the ignition is switched off.
