Does the Universal Charging Phone Clamp draw power when no smartphone is inserted?Updated a month ago

Yes, to a small extent. If you connect the SP Connect Universal Charging Phone Clamp directly to the motorcycle battery using the SP Connect Cable 12V DC, a small standby current may continue to flow even after the smartphone has been removed.

This is due to the technical design, as the Universal Charging Phone Clamp does not have a separate on/off switch and remains ready for operation while connected to a power source.

What does this mean for the motorcycle battery?

Power consumption while in standby is very low. However, during longer periods when the motorcycle is not being used, continuous standby current may place a load on the battery, particularly if the battery is older or already weakened.

For use on a motorcycle, we recommend connecting the SP Connect Cable 12V DC to a switched ignition power source.

  • The power supply is automatically disconnected when the ignition is switched off.
  • No standby current is drawn while the motorcycle is switched off.
  • This helps protect the battery from unnecessary discharge.
  • The Universal Charging Phone Clamp is automatically ready for use when the ignition is switched on.

Alternative for direct battery connection

If connecting to a switched ignition power source is not possible and the Universal Charging Phone Clamp is connected directly to the battery, we recommend manually disconnecting the power supply during longer periods of non-use or using a suitable switching system.

Note for USB operation

If the Universal Charging Phone Clamp is powered via the supplied USB-A cable using a USB power source or powerbank, standby power consumption depends on the respective USB connection or powerbank.

Summary

The Universal Charging Phone Clamp may continue to draw a small standby current after the smartphone has been removed. For motorcycle use, we therefore recommend connecting the Cable 12V DC to a switched ignition power source so that the power supply is automatically disconnected when the ignition is switched off.
